Vite.dev — case study
Next-generation frontend build tool
── Facts
── Write-up
Vite is the build tool behind most of the modern JavaScript ecosystem. Over 80,000 GitHub stars, tens of millions of weekly npm downloads, millions of developers relying on it every day. Simply put, it's what turns your development code into code optimized for the browser. Redesigning its homepage meant redesigning the front door of a project that large, in public, for a community that would react immediately.
::WorkTestimonial{author="Evan You"}
Its site showed none of that scale. The page was sober and descriptive like plain technical documentation, with almost no identity of its own, and nothing helped you picture what Vite actually does. Until then, bundling, development servers, and native ES modules remained abstract concepts, with nothing but text to support them.
* Approach
For the color work, I played with those already present in the brand: blue, violet, and yellow. That multicolored logo proved very practical for illustrating the many concepts and programming languages that need to be evoked throughout the page.
Most of the work went into making those ideas visible. I built the hero around a processor bearing the Vite logo, to show its central place on the web, then animated flows representing the different code languages running through it like an electric current. That section simply explains the concept of web bundling. The rest of the page follows the same logic, with interactive, carefully crafted illustrations that convey both the concepts and the value of the product.
That attention to detail in the animations and illustrations is crucial for projects of this scale. I want developers to want to use the product from the homepage alone, because they'll associate the quality of the site's execution with that of the tool.
* Outcome
The site stayed live for a little over a year, with a very warm reception from the community at launch. It has since given way to a unified identity across all VoidZero products, a project I cover on the VoidZero page.
