A few words about AI
AI is everywhere in tech jobs. I think a designer needs to take a stand and have a point of view. Here is mine, as an open letter.
Artificial intelligence put design within everyone's reach. It also made attention to detail far more precious.
Everything became easy to make
On November 30, 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT. Since then, models have kept coming, each one going further. In tech, every week brings a tool that shakes up the habits of designers, developers, product managers, and everyone who builds for the web.
Shaping an idea has never been this fast or this simple. Ideas and creations have become abundant.
Putting that power in as many hands as possible is what pushed me to help StackBlitz build Bolt.new from scratch in mid-2024. I found it incredible that anyone could bring their ideas to life.
The flip side
But AI is a double-edged sword. It raised the baseline: good enough now comes without effort. Anyone can become a junior developer or designer in a day. Used as a shortcut, it pulls us toward a bland 10 out of 20.
So in a world where everything is easy to make, what is left to create? Where does the difference get made?
What is left to cultivate
What is left to cultivate, for me, is care. Detail.
A margin, a line, a few milliseconds of animation. Every choice shapes how something feels.
Details escape logic and data. Yet they are among the most precious parts of a web experience. In an age of automation and speed, care and judgement are what keep design human. A truly memorable experience will always need reflection and decisions made by humans. These interfaces are meant for us.
Making meaning visible
A lot of people say today that taste is one of the most important things for standing out and succeeding. I agree with them. Only for me, it always has been.
I want to bring that level of rigor to the companies I work with. Making meaning visible.
